Lower Elementary
In the first, second, and third grades, the elementary school is dedicated to giving children a firm foundation in reading, phonics, spelling, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies.
Phonics Training
Begun in kindergarten, the instruction continues and strengthens in each lower elementary year. By the middle of first grade, most children can read and comprehend any book or story suitable to their individual interests. The reading program continues in the second and third grades, with particular emphasis on reading comprehension and vocabulary development.
Handwriting
Training in manuscript continues through first grade. In second grade, students are introduced to cursive. Beginning in third grade, work focuses on both manuscript and cursive, with cursive skills being further developed.
Mathematics
The instruction stresses a clear understanding of the mechanics of mathematical computations. By the end of the third grade, students are expected to have mastered addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. In these grades, we also emphasize reasoning and estimating. Additionally, we use manipulatives to make concepts concrete, with critical thinking skills being an integral part of the process. Skills are reinforced in math lab.
Original Composition
This is emphasized throughout the lower school. Children learn to write using correct style, complete sentences, proper punctuation, and capitalization. Creative writing is also stressed, focusing especially on the creative thought process.
Science
Earth, life, and physical sciences are taught using a hands-on approach that coordinates the elementary science lab with classroom instruction.
Social Studies
Students learn history, geography, and map skills. Special emphasis is placed on geography, an area that is often neglected in other schools. Much of the focus in social studies is expressed through hands-on activities and projects, films, videos, and field trips.
