Upper Elementary
In the fourth and fifth grades, children receive instruction that is designed to provide the best possible preparation for their continued education.
This includes departmentalizing the fourth and fifth grade into 1 1/2-hour blocks of math and science, social studies and language arts/grammar reading and language arts/writing. Studies have shown that such departmentalization makes the transition to secondary school far smoother.
Reading
In upper elementary, we emphasize reading comprehension and literary analysis using poetry, short stories, non fiction sources and novels. These reading skills are further utilized and reinforced in science and social studies. Vocabulary skills are enhanced through the use of integrated curriculum materials.
Grammar & Writing
The formal study of grammar continues with intensive instruction in all parts of speech, syntax, usage, punctuation, and capitalization. Students are exposed to various writing styles through literary connections and classroom workshops.
Students are given opportunities to write daily. The writing process is emphasized and the students are encouraged to take pieces from draft to publication. The vocabulary of writing and writing assessment are introduced and developed through The 6 Traits Method. Mini lessons are used to teach students the traits of good writing.
The reading and writing connection is emphasized and the themes used in reading are also covered in writing, thus allowing students the opportunity to write in different ways.
Mathematics
We focus on strengthening students’ basic computation skills in the upper elementary school. All math is taught one year above grade level.
Fourth-graders gain proficiency in all operations involving whole numbers and decimals, and the study of fractions continues through the fifth grade. Students become competent in working with fractions and mixed numbers.
Additional topics include perimeter, area, measurements using both metric and customary units, reading & interpreting various types of graphs, factoring, primes, multiples, ratios and proportion, percentages, pre-algebra, and critical thinking and logic skills.
History, Geography and Map Skills
These are studied interdependently, with the goal of helping students understand themselves and others in the world around them. We teach map-making techniques along with physical and political geography. Fourth graders study the regions of the U.S. with areas of focus that include: Texas history, Native American civilizations, and use and conservation of natural resources. Fifth-grade history includes a thorough study of developing American civilizations through World War II with special emphasis on the Constitution and government.
Computer Lab
Students learn the basics of proper keyboarding and simple word processing. We use fun, challenging computer-based projects to enhance the classroom curriculum. Additionally, teachers employ Internet-based projects to reinforce skills and bring a new dimension to the learning process. Every classroom in The Village School has at least one state-of-the-art computers for student use.
Science
Science is an integrated study of life science, Earth Science, and physical science. All students participate in a weekly science lab and present a topic on their choosing at the grade level science fair.
Science Lab
A science coordinator helps students enjoy hands-on experience in physical, earth, and life sciences. Follow-up activities and projects are conducted by the classroom teacher, making science fun and exciting for students.
Art Appreciation
We teach art appreciation as well as practical skills, such as lettering, poster making, balance, and design. Students are urged to truly look at their surroundings and notice differences, learn shading, drawing, and perspective.
Music
Students have the choice of taking band, choir, or orchestra. Band and orchestra are offered at the beginning or advanced level, and we have certified teachers for each group.
Physical Education
Daily classes teach skills in basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, and track and field for all students.
Spanish
Formal instruction continues to provide students with the tools necessary to understand and converse in a second language.
Drama
The Village School’s drama classes provide an engaging outlet for students to improve their performance skills, with an emphasis on public speaking.
