CHESS WINS STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
Alex Liu Wins National Chess Championship!

Alex Liu won all seven of his matches to capture the 2nd grade National Chess Championship at the USCF Nationals held this past weekend. Showing great determination and skill, Alex defeated all comers including the top two seeds in the tournament. When the final match came, Alex had played nearly 18 hours of Chess over the course of two days. Showing no lack of energy, he spent the next 2 ½  hours bobbing up and down in his chair while hammering out his final victory.

In addition to winning the individual championship, Alex led the 2nd grade team to its second National Championship in a row.  John Coudsi played fantastic chess, beating players ranked far higher than himself to gain five wins and the 11th place individual trophy. Paschalis Economou and Nicholas Wille each earned four wins to seal the team championship.

The Kindergarten team played one player short but still managed a fine 3rd place team trophy. Elliot Glatman won five games in route to a 9th place individual trophy finish. Charisma Gajula backed up Elliot's effort with four fine victories of her own. With just one more player this team would have contested for the top prize. The 1st grade team led by Aaron Chang, Rorye Jones and Amit Kavadi won the 5th place team trophy, while the 4th grade team led by Devan Shan, Parin Thakkar and Andrew Wang brought home the 7th place team trophy.

This was the most hotly contested tournament that this writer has ever been too. The talent in every grade was extraordinary. My hat is off to the efforts of all 56 Village Vikings that attended. There were many 3 hour games but the group kept their heads high, supported each other and played hard in every round.

Village School Gala Wrap-up

Many thanks to Beverly and Peter Farrell for chairing the most successful Gala ever!!!  Thanks to the efforts of the Farrells and all of their volunteers, the Gala raised about $100,000 for the Parent Teacher Advisory Board.  The PTAB is very happy to announce its pledge to purchase a new 50-passenger bus - complete with seatbelts and air conditioning - for the school.  The PTAB is also considering the purchase of an additional bus to round out the school's fleet.  The hope would be to purchase enough buses to accommodate class field trips and sports team travel to away games.

Now is the time to volunteer for the 2008 Gala committees!  Since the Gala is usually in the Fall, many of the positions are filled by Spring.  If you are interested in working on the Gala next year in any capacity, please e-mail VikingVoices@aol.com and your name will be put on the list!  If you are interested in chairing a committee, please indicate this.  The position of Gala chairperson(s) is still available!!!!

Any age child that arrives late or leaves early, for any reason, must be signed in or out by a parent at the reception desk.  This includes being late for school in the morning.   Even Pre-K and K students must be signed in.  These dear little ones also need to be walked to class by a welcome desk volunteer or an employee.  Thank you all for helping us keep all our children safe and happy.

Morning Greeters Needed!

The 8:30 Morning Greeters need your help. Several people have volunteered their time the first semester, and we need some new faces for the second half of the school year. It's an easy, fun way to get involved with the school. It only takes 15 minutes. Some volunteers are stay-at-home parents, while others find this is a great way to volunteer as a working parent, before the workday begins. We leave at 8:46 A.M. Please just park your car at 8:25 A.M., walk up and introduce yourself. We can tell you which mornings need your help. Or, call Sharon Wezniak at 713-983-9459 during the day. Your child gets to be one of the first students in the classroom the mornings you volunteer, and you get to help a lot of cute little ones start their day! Take your turn helping and make your child proud!

Parent Teacher Association coming to The Village School

On January 10, 2008 at 6:30 P.M., there will be a meeting for all parents and staff of The Village School who are interested in forming a Parent Teacher Association organized under the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers (Texas PTA).  Through the PTA, we hope to provide greater support for our school and expand upon opportunities for parents to participate in our school community.  Everyone is welcome to join, attend meetings, volunteer for committees, and participate in educational and community-building events.  Once we have established the PTA, future contributions made through such successful endeavors as our magazine drive and gala may be claimed as charitable deductions.  And, as with the current Parent Teacher Advisory Board, all fund-raising conducted by the PTA will directly serve our children and The Village School.  Look for more detailed information to come in the mail over the holiday break!
