Dear Jerry Spinelli,
Everybody is different, that’s what makes life so interesting, but Stargirl is not just different. She’s out of this world different. After reading your book Stargirl I realized that everybody has a part of Stargirl’s amazing personality. Everybody has their own way of letting loose. We’re just too scared to show it because of what people might think of us. From the day I flipped the last page in your book I could always tell when people are trying to be something they’re not. To me, it seems like people change themselves hoping that everyone around them will like it, that way they will have more comfort. But…what if people didn’t try and change. What if everyone was like Stargirl and would root for the other team as well as her own, or give complete strangers gifts. I’ve always wondered if there is someone in the world just as amazing as Stargirl; someone that everyone could learn from. During the time since I’ve read Stargirl I’ve noticed a change in myself too. Instead of following the crowd in everything I’ve kind of followed my own thing. At the beginning I thought my friends would leave me, but I was surprised to find them changing to. After this I did realize that one person can change the people around them without them even knowing. It’s kind of like a chain that keeps going on and on. Reading your book changed my whole perspective on life as I knew it. It changed the way I looked at myself, my friends around me, and everyday people I don’t even know. Stargirl is one amazing girl that many people should inspire to become like, and the people that do will see things in a much more interesting way. They’ll finally see colors instead of all the black and white.
Sincerely,
Alyssa J., Grade 7
