Clear blue is the sullen sky

On the yawning autumn days

And the land, with but a sigh

Shall give yield to the sun’s rays

The winding brooks and quiet ponds

The massive seas of thunderous foam

With the towering hull of bronze

Happily do the sailors roam

The sailors that, from land afar

Traveled here for homeland’s sake

Confident, they surely are

Clueless of their lives at stake

Discovery, standing tall and proud

The Godspeed with its colossal mast

Susan Constant, light as a cloud

Sailing over water vast

They made homes upon Virginian coast

 Within dreaded Powhatan’s land

A very inhospitable host

With many savages at his command

The trees of yellow, orange, and red

Mingle with the wavering breeze

Both are dreading the winter ahead

Blizzards, snowstorms, and biting freeze

They named their settlement Jamestown

After their powerful, mighty King James

Who wore the lordly royal crown

(They were not very creative with names)

An English traveler; John Rolfe he was called

Married Pocahontas the month before May

Their peoples’ quarrels temporarily stalled

Until the daughter herself passed away

Our country’s forefathers were these men

Heading into land uncharted before

We still remember those deeds done then

And they will forever be etched in lore
